Dividal

Northern Lights

On the 27th of September in 2020, I witnessed the clearest Northern Lights I've seen to date. A six hour hike from one cabin to another brought us  deep in the heart of the Dividal National Park. You were so far away from civilization that the only form of communication was a satelite phone. Aside from the peace and quite this also meant another thing; no light pollution and thus, a clear night sky.

People's eyes were glued to the window as it started getting dark. It was about two hours later when the beautiful colors painted the sky. Clear greens mixed with pink. The dancing and swirling of the lights was breathtaking. You had no idea where to look as everywhere around you, something was happening.

Gimsøy

Gimsøya is one of the islands belonging to the Lofoten islands in Norway. Aside from being one of my favourite places to visit in Lofoten, it's also where we got the opportunity to shoot a dreamy Northern Lights that lasted for hours.

It was mid January. Our required quarantine just ended the same night, and luckily we had the the opportunity to drive to Gimsøya and photograph the northern lights. It was late at night and freezing. Hot chocolate breaks were very much a requirement. The starry night sky was bright. Finally after a lot of waiting we were awarded with the spectacular Aurora. One moment the lights looked frozen in time, until it erupted in a beautiful dance. The green lights even lit up the darkest of mountain tops.
